What we cover
Japan Festival Atlas explains Japanese festivals for people visiting Japan for the first time: when a festival happens, which day to go, what you will see, and the kami it is held for.
How we research
Our guides are written with the help of AI research and drafting tools and reviewed before publication. Every guide lists its sources, starting with official shrine, city and tourism association information and published scholarship in Japanese and English.
Dates
Each festival date shows its status. Confirmed means we checked it against an official announcement. Same dates every year means the festival is fixed to the calendar. Estimated means the date is inferred from past years and may change. We send reminders only for confirmed and fixed dates.
Images
We use historical artworks in the public domain and photographs published under open licenses or with permission. Every image is credited in its caption with a link to its source. We do not present AI-generated images as photographs.
Corrections
